I think the twitter talk is probably overblown here in the West as a means of directing the protests (as Nexon mentioned subsequently), but that doesn’t mean that the State Department’s gentle nudge of Twitter to push scheduled maintenance for twelve hours wasn’t an extremely clever move. This the kind of advantage that accrues solely to a hegemonic power (to say nothing of crafting a society that put these tools in play in the first place). This is the extent of the influence the United States should have on the events in Iran—passive, remote, deniable—and an excellent example of the subtlety we hope Clinton’s Dept. and the Obama administration takes toward it’s foreign affairs.
Lastly, no post of that title would be complete without mentioning that I think twitter is stupid. Sorry. I do.
