Regrettably, I don’t have time for a full post. I just wanted to mention that Ross Douthat’s appointment to the Times’ editorial page is an extraordinarily good choice. His thoughtful, principled conservatism will more than replace Kristol’s lethargic dogmatism. As I’ve said before on this page, the single most pressing intellectual task facing this country—the single thing that would have the greatest benefits—is to reconstruct the conservative movement into something that makes this country stronger, healthier, more prosperous, rather than an errant distraction. If I had my way, conservatism would get this decade’s best political minds in the country. Thankfully, one of them now has a major position from which to speak. I look forward to reading him religiously.
